Inspiration from the Youngest Creators

Earlier this year, I watched kids pour their hearts into hand-decorated masks during our Mardi Gras Maskerade show—with a mix of joyful energy and fearless focus that left a lasting impression. It reminded me that children don’t just make art—they feel it. Given the right space, their creativity doesn’t just shine—it soars.

First Annual Kids Summer Art Camp!

It wasn’t only about paint and sparkle—and yes, there was glitter everywhere! But it was more about the way their eyes lit up, how they stood a little taller with each brushstroke, proudly showing off their creations like tiny art directors. That kind of joy? It’s contagious. And it’s what made us realize we wanted more of that (well… maybe just a little less glitter)—but definitely more creativity, more confidence, more proud little artists beaming beside their creations.

And so, the idea for our very first Kids Summer Art Camp was born. From June 2–6, Padre Island Art Gallery will be opening the doors to young creators ages 6–12 for five fun-filled days of painting, jewelry-making, crafting, and more!

Summer Art Camp

Every day will bring something fresh. Local artist, Vanessa Spittler and I will be teaching paintingjewelry making, daily crafts and themed art projects. We’re setting the stage for kids to experiment with new materials, build something with their own hands, and feel proud of what they’ve made.

We’ll also provide bottled water and nut-free snacks each day, and we’re wrapping up the week with a fun Friday surprise that’s sure to leave campers smiling.

The Value of Creativity Off the Screen

In a world where so much of life happens on a screen, creating space for hands-on, unplugged experiences feels more important than ever. Art helps kids slow down. It gives them permission to explore, to try, and to make something real—something that reflects who they are. And what they learn during that process often sticks with them long after the final brushstroke.

As a gallerist, mentor, and mom, and grandmother, I’ve seen what creativity can do. It builds confidence. It helps kids find their voice. It reminds them that their ideas matter. And who knows—maybe this camp will be the spark that sets one of our young campers on a lifelong creative journey as a professional artist!

For Grown-Ups

Padre Island Art Gallery's summer line-up isn't just for kids. This Friday, May 16th from 11 AM to 3 PM, we’re hosting a one-day abstract art workshop with Joseph Raymond II. His bold, expressive style and welcoming approach make this a great fit for beginners and experienced artists alike.

Then join us this Friday evening after the workshop from 6–9 PM for his Art Show, where you can meet Joseph and be the first to explore his latest collection.

Mark your calendars now for the Incognito Art Show on Wednesday, June 18th—doors open at 5:30p. You don't want to miss this exciting event!
