My Inspiration and My Process
As an artist, I love exploring themes of tranquility, transformation, and hope. My work is about capturing the beauty of the world, often using natural elements and layering textures and colors to bring each piece to life. It’s an organic, intuitive process, and I love seeing how each piece unfolds and reveals its own story.
One quote that has always deeply resonated with me is by Georgia O'Keeffe, who said, “To create one's world in any of the arts takes courage... I’ve been absolutely terrified every moment of my life, and I’ve never let it keep me from a single thing that I wanted to do.” If I can inspire even one person to grow and achieve more than they imagined in their art or in their business, then I consider that a true success.
I am also inspired by Vincent van Gogh, who once said: “If you hear a voice within you say, 'you cannot paint,' then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced.” He also said, “Great things are done by a series of small things brought together.”
These words remind me that creating art, much like building a successful business, is a journey made up of countless small efforts. Every brushstroke, every business decision, every moment of planning or learning—all of these seemingly small actions come together to create something greater. When I am painting a new piece or developing a strategic plan for an artist’s career, I see the power in these "small things" adding up.
Throughout my journey, I’ve learned not to let the opinions of nay-sayers hold me back. I have never believed that a closed door means it’s time to give up. To me, it simply means it’s time to turn and find another path—one that could lead to something even greater. Sometimes, the obstacles we face are not dead ends but signs guiding us toward better opportunities, just waiting to be discovered.
Each small step, every tiny success, and each lesson learned—together they weave into something truly meaningful and impactful. This is the beauty of the process. The reward lies in knowing that every part of the journey contributes to a vision far greater than the sum of its parts.

Why I Created Educational Courses for Artists
My course creation was born out of my genuine desire to help as many artists as possible navigate the often-overwhelming business side of art. Over the years, I’ve learned tools, tips, and strategies that have made a real difference—not just in my own career, but in the careers of the many artists I’ve worked with as a gallery owner. I’ve seen the struggles, the self-doubt, and the roadblocks that come with trying to turn creativity into a sustainable business. That’s why I created my Business Guide course—to share everything I’ve learned, so artists can spend less time guessing and more time creating the work they love.
About Me
Hi, I’m Melissa Mitchell! I’m a Texas-based artist and entrepreneur with a lifelong passion for creativity. With over 20 years of experience in business development, marketing, and branding, I’ve honed the ability to seamlessly merge artistic expression with strategic insight to create work that is both meaningful and impactful. My art—spanning acrylic painting, watercolor, and mixed media—has been exhibited in galleries across Texas. Inspired by nature, my pieces aim to capture beauty and evoke a sense of peace, offering viewers a moment of tranquility in a busy world.
In addition to painting, I founded Melissa Mitchell Art & Design, where I specialize in fine art, logo creation, and educational courses designed to help artists succeed in the business side of art. I believe that creative individuals deserve the tools and knowledge to sustain their practice without sacrificing the joy of creating. Through my courses, I guide emerging artists in navigating branding, business development, and the often-complex world of art entrepreneurship, empowering them to build thriving, sustainable careers.
Currently, I serve as the Gallerist at Padre Island Art Gallery, where I manage operations and represent nearly 100 talented artists. It’s an incredible community that allows me to foster connections, support local creativity, and help artists discover their unique paths to success. I also write The Art of Island Life, a weekly newspaper column that explores creativity, coastal culture, and community through the lens of local art and events. For me, it’s all about building sustainable businesses that celebrate artistry, foster growth, and strengthen our creative community.
