About Melissa Mitchell
Hi, I’m Melissa Mitchell—an artist, writer, gallerist, and entrepreneur living on the Texas Gulf Coast. I’ve spent most of my life creating things: paintings and stories, businesses and brands, recipes, opportunities, and spaces where other people can create, too.
My path hasn’t exactly followed a straight line—and I wouldn’t want it to. I’ve worked in healthcare, built businesses, raised four children, opened a gallery, written a weekly newspaper column, taught artists, painted more canvases than I could count, and somehow found myself writing books along the way.
The common thread has always been creativity, curiosity, and connection—and the belief that some of the most meaningful things in life are found in the small moments we might otherwise overlook.
Storytelling at the Heart of Everything
I’ve always loved telling stories—though I didn’t always realize I was a storyteller. In high school, after reading my writing assignments, my principal told me I should write a book. I laughed. At the time, that wasn’t on my radar. But I did make up bedtime stories for my little brother, and all these years later, he still remembers them. So maybe this was always part of the plan. I just didn’t know it yet.
Over time, I’ve learned that stories aren’t just found in books—they’re woven into paintings, conversations, and everyday moments. That’s why I believe people don’t just buy art—they buy the story behind it. They buy a feeling, a moment, a memory. I encourage the artists I mentor to share what makes their piece special, because the right story doesn’t just sell a painting—it creates a connection.

Over time, I’ve learned that stories aren’t found only in books. They’re woven into paintings, conversations, businesses, family recipes, gallery walls, and everyday moments. That’s why I believe people don’t just buy art—they connect with the story behind it. They buy a feeling, a moment, a memory.
That idea influences nearly everything I create.
As a Writer
Each week, I write The Art of Island Life, my newspaper column and blog about art, creativity, community, food, family, and the interesting little moments found in everyday Island life.
My blog gives me a little more room than print—space for additional photographs, videos, recipes, links, and the occasional story that takes a detour before finding its way home.
I recently completed The Meaning in the Margins: Stories of Grit, Grace, Glitter, and a Little Dog Drool, a collection of personal essays filled with humor, heart, encouragement, and a little hard-earned wisdom.
I’ve also written 15 Days of Grace, Grit, and Getting Through It, a daily encouragement series, and several children’s projects are currently taking shape—including one involving a particularly persistent caterpillar.
Apparently, one book at a time would be far too sensible.
As an Artist
Much of my artwork is inspired by the ever-changing beauty of the coast—its stillness and movement, weathered textures, wildlife, light, and the quiet moments that make you stop for just a second longer.
I work primarily in acrylic, watercolor, and mixed media, often layering natural textures to create a sense of serenity and transformation.
And you may notice butterflies appearing throughout my work.
I’ve always been fascinated by them—not only for their beauty, but for what they represent: transformation, resilience, and the reminder that where we begin may look nothing like where we eventually arrive.
Sometimes I plan to paint one. Sometimes I simply sit in front of a canvas and feel that one belongs there.
Over the years, a few of those butterflies have found their way to people who needed them for reasons I never could have known when I picked up the brush.
Those moments have taught me something important about making art: once we put something into the world, its meaning no longer belongs entirely to us.
As a Gallerist
I also own and operate Evoke Studio & Gifts, a boutique gallery on Padre Island representing a wonderfully diverse group of artists—from emerging creatives finding their confidence to established and award-winning professionals.
I get to watch someone nervously submit work for the first time, then see their face when it sells. I get to introduce collectors to artists they might never have discovered otherwise. I’ve watched friendships form, careers grow, children light up when they see their artwork displayed, and art bring people together for causes much bigger than any one of us.
I believe galleries should feel welcoming, not intimidating. Art is meant to be experienced, talked about, laughed over, questioned, loved—and sometimes taken home.
Creating that kind of space has become one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.
As an Entrepreneur & Educator
Long before I entered the art world full-time, I spent two decades working in healthcare marketing, business development, and brand strategy.
In 2009, I took another turn and launched Prancing Paws Doggie Daycare, a business that taught me quite a bit about entrepreneurship—and possibly even more about people.
Those years of business experience eventually followed me into the art world.
Today, alongside my own studio practice and gallery work, I help artists better understand the business behind their creativity: pricing, branding, presentation, marketing, gallery relationships, and building a sustainable creative career without losing sight of why they began making art in the first place.
I’ve developed online courses and creative resources from lessons I’ve actually learned, used, taught—and occasionally learned the hard way.
I know what it feels like to stand on both sides of the gallery wall.
That perspective shapes the way I teach.
A Few Things You Might Not Know
I’m a mom of four grown children and a very proud grandmother. Family is woven through almost everything I do—and quite a few of my stories.
I love to cook and bake, although “recipe” can sometimes be a generous description of my habit of adding a little of this and a little of that until it tastes right.
I believe good food should be shared, real butter is worth it, creativity belongs everywhere, and there is almost always room for dessert.
I’ve started over more than once. I’ve changed careers, changed directions, survived things I never expected to face, followed opportunities I couldn't have predicted, and learned that a closed door doesn't necessarily mean stop.
Sometimes it simply means there’s another way in.
These days, I’m happiest creating something, helping someone else create something, spending time with the people I love—or following some completely unexpected idea just to see where it leads.
