Spring is more than just a change in the weather—it’s a reset button, a time to shake off the heavy winter blues and step into something fresh. The longer days and warmer air pull us outside, encouraging us to dig our hands into the earth, soak up the sunshine, and breathe a little deeper.

For me, this season is about planting—not just flowers and herbs, but new ideas, fresh energy, and creative possibilities. Gardening, much like painting, is an act of hope. Each plant, each color choice, each carefully placed seed contributes to something bigger—something beautiful that evolves over time.

Creativity in the Spring Garden with a Rosemary Spritz Recipe

Creating a garden—or even arranging a few potted plants—is much like creating art. The way colors blend, the textures of leaves and petals, and the way sunlight shifts throughout the day all come together to form a living canvas. Like painting, you adjust, experiment, and learn as you go.

Beyond aesthetics, gardening is also about connection—slowing down enough to appreciate the details, noticing the tiny green sprout breaking through the soil, or catching the scent of rosemary as you brush past it. If you’re looking for a low-maintenance, drought-tolerant plant that offers more than just beauty, I highly recommend this plant. Rosemary helps repel mosquitoes, its fragrant oils can help boost memory, and it’s a culinary powerhouse. Add it to homemade bread, stews, and roasted vegetables, add it as a garnish, or infuse it in vodka for a refreshing summer cocktail — the possibilities are endless.

Gardening reminds us that growth takes time, care, and patience. Nurturing a garden, exploring a new idea, or focusing on your well-being all take time and care, but the rewards are always worth the effort.

My Recipe for Rosemary Spritz

• 1.5 oz rosemary-infused vodka

• 3 oz Moscato

• 3 oz seltzer

• 1 slice of lemon

• 1 rosemary sprig

Infuse vodka at least 30 minutes ahead by placing 2 rosemary sprigs in a jar with vodka. (I like to make a larger bottle to keep on hand. The longer it sits—the stronger the infusion.)

Fill a glass with ice, pour in vodka, Moscato, and seltzer.

Garnish with lemon and rosemary.

A Season of Renewal & Conservation

With the beauty of spring also comes the responsibility to be mindful of our environment. With our area currently under drought restrictions, water conservation is more important than ever. But that doesn’t mean we can’t still enjoy gardening.

Potted plants can be watered more efficiently, using only what they need. I personally rely on rain barrels with rain chains attached to my roofline, which help me collect and store water naturally. It’s incredible how much moisture gathers from the air—running down the roof, through the chain, and into the barrels for later use. Even small conservation efforts like this can make a difference, allowing us to nurture our plants while respecting our resources.

Embrace the Season and Bring the Outdoors In

Spring is an invitation to refresh—not just our surroundings, but our mindset. Step away from the noise of daily distractions, put down the devices, and be fully present in the moment. Step outside, close your eyes, take a deep, cleansing breath and soak in the beauty that surrounds us—the rhythm of the waves, the warmth of the sun, the vibrant greens and florals that are emerging. Try something new, dig into a project that excites you, and embrace the simple joys of the Island.

If you don’t have a garden space, bringing a touch of nature inside can have the same uplifting effect. A vase of fresh flowers, a potted basil plant in the kitchen, or artwork inspired by nature can brighten your space and your spirit or of someone you love. Stop in the Island's new floral shop, Beach'n Blooms. You don't need a special occasion to give a flower — even a single bloom can brighten anyone's day.

If you’re looking for something that captures the beauty of the season without planting, stop by Padre Island Art Gallery for a wonderful selection of floral-inspired paintings and garden décor created by local artists. It’s the perfect way to bring a bit of spring creativity into your home or give a thoughtful gift to someone else who loves this season as much as you do.
