Through Their Eyes

This week, my house is filled with extra laughter, sandy shoes by the door, and the joyful noise that only children can bring. Having all of my grandchildren here has reminded me of something simple and true: there’s a certain magic in seeing the Island through fresh eyes.

We’ve been checking off our Island adventure list—early beach mornings searching for seashells, a visit to the Texas Sealife Center, a pirate cruise out of Port Aransas. In between, there’s been yard games, shaved ice, and starlit evenings spent pointing out cloud shapes and telling stories. And with every wide-eyed "Wow!" I’m reminded how lucky we are to live in a place that others only get to visit for a few days.

Sometimes, in the rhythm of daily life, we forget what’s right outside our door. It takes a visitor—a child, a grandchild, a friend from out of town—to nudge us out of the routine and back into wonder.

The Everyday Island Adventure

You don’t have to go far to feel like you’ve gone somewhere special. Adventure lives in the small things: searching for seashells shaped like butterflies, watching crabs scurry across the sand, hearing the gulls overhead as the sun rises across the dunes. The beach at dawn is one of my favorite places—calm, quiet, and full of promise.

At home, there’s laughter over backyard games, chalk-covered driveways, and bursts of imagination from the simplest moments. And somewhere in all that play, we remember how to be present again. That’s the real treasure.

The Art of Local Living

Being an Islander means we get to live in a place that feels like vacation to others. But it also means we have to remind ourselves to step back into that mindset now and then. You don’t need a plane ticket or packed bags. You just need a willingness to slow down, take it all in, and say yes to play. The art of adventure is really the art of being fully here.

Mark Your Calendar: The Incognito Art Show

If you’re looking for your next little adventure, we invite you to the Incognito Art Show on Wednesday, June 18th. Doors open at 5:30 PM, and this unique event is not only creative—it’s deeply meaningful.

Professional artists from within 100 miles of the gallery have contributed anonymous 5x7 artworks. You won’t know who created what until after purchase, which adds a fun twist to collecting. Even better? Proceeds go to Kaylee’s Light, a local initiative that restocks toy shelves at Driscoll Children’s Hospital each summer—right when donations tend to slow.

And for a bit of fun: each guest will receive a card at entry and can try to guess the artist behind their favorite piece. All correct guesses will be entered into a drawing to win an original work from the show.

Come Rediscover the Wonder

Whether you're five or ninety-five, the Island offers something magical if you’re willing to look for it. So go out and catch a sunrise. Hunt for shells. Say yes to the pirate cruise or that extra scoop of ice cream. Reconnect with this place—not just as a resident, but as an explorer.

The Art of Island Life will return next week with more stories and inspiration from our coastal community. Have a story to share or an upcoming event? Reach out to me at melissa@padreislandartgallery.com.
