December 4, 2025
What a week it has been—opening day at Evoke, Thanksgiving gatherings, Island Bingo, and a whirlwind of activity that left my heart full and my to-do list growing by the minute, with Christmas shopping still untouched and inventory arriving faster than I can unpack it. Even in the rush, I’ve found myself thinking a lot about gratitude—not just the kind we talk about on Thanksgiving, but the quiet, everyday kind that catches you by surprise.
It’s in the early morning breeze coming off the water.
It’s in a neighbor’s wave across the parking lot.
It’s in the warm chaos of a kitchen full of family.
And sometimes, it’s in the tiniest moments we often overlook—at least until they remind us to slow down.

As we shift from Thanksgiving into the heart of the holiday season, those little reminders feel especially meaningful.
The Power of Small Gestures
The holidays have a way of bringing out both the best in us and the busiest in us. But I’ve learned that the most memorable moments are rarely the big, planned ones. They’re the simple acts of kindness that slip in quietly: someone holding the door when your arms are full, the unexpected compliment from a stranger, a lovely surprise congratulatory bouquet, a friend dropping off dinner “just because”, or a spontaneous evening boat ride with a good friend! And at the heart of so many of these moments is friendship—the kind that anchors us and lifts us up.

These little moments of connection are what make our Island feel like a community—not just a place. And maybe that’s why I’ve been thinking about the traditions we carry into this season…the new ones, the old ones, and the ones we don’t always realize we’re building until we look back later.
Holiday Kindness, Island Style
So as we head into December, my hope is simple: that we all make a little space for kindness. It doesn’t need to be grand. It doesn’t need to take time you don’t have (trust me, I feel the Christmas countdown already). It just needs heart.
Sometimes it’s something as small as discovering your drive-through order has already been paid for by the car ahead of you. You didn’t expect it and you can’t explain it, but suddenly your whole day feels a little lighter. And nine times out of ten, you pass it forward—because kindness has a way of multiplying the moment it’s shared.
A warm hello
A smile at the checkout line
A handwritten note
Buying local when you can
Checking on a neighbor
Paying for someone behind you
Sharing a memory with someone who needs it
These are the small things that ripple out in big ways.
Carrying Gratitude Into the Season
A little tradition worth mentioning:
If you spot one of the hand-made ornaments tucked around the Island this season, keep it as a gentle reminder of beauty—or pass it along to brighten someone else’s day. A simple gesture, but sometimes simple is all we need.

After a week filled with celebration, community, and more moving parts than I can count, I’m deeply aware of how blessed I am.
But more than anything, I’m grateful for the shared moments—the kindness and the unexpected stories—that remind us what this season is truly about.
The Art of Island Life will return next week with more coastal stories and community inspiration. Have a holiday tradition or memory you’d like to share? I’d love to hear from you at contact@melissamitchellart.com
