Art has a remarkable way of finding its way to where it belongs. This month I am honored to share an extraordinary story of generosity, community, and artistic legacy that surrounds a truly stunning piece of work.

In 1990, Carolyn Utigard Thomas, a prominent local artist,—well-known for her work with Hallmark before retiring to paint for the joy of it—created an impressive watercolor painting titled, Taos Memories, unique not just in its beauty but in its scale. Measuring 45" x 95", this incredible piece stands out for its size, particularly in the delicate medium of watercolor. The painting was commissioned by Island resident Richard Pittman, who cherished it for decades, showcasing it as a centerpiece in his home.
Recently, as Richard prepared to move, he realized his new space could not accommodate the piece. He visited the gallery to explore options and, rather than selling it or storing it away, Richard made the heartfelt decision to donate the painting back to the artist, allowing it to return to its creator’s hands. This act of kindness speaks volumes about the connection we form with art and the respect we hold for the artists who create it.
A Legacy in Watercolor
The artist, Carolyn Utigard Thomas, renowned for her mastery of watercolor, has left an indelible mark on the art world. Her time with Hallmark honed her skills, but it was in her retirement that her passion truly flourished. Free to paint without deadlines or commercial demands, she creates works that capture light, movement, and emotion with breathtaking precision.
This piece, created 35 years ago, is no exception. Its vibrant hues and intricate layering showcase the depth of her talent, and its scale makes it a rare and unforgettable example of the possibilities that watercolor can achieve.

A New Chapter for a Watercolor Masterpiece
Now, this stunning work of art will begin a new chapter. For a limited time, it will be on display at the Padre Island Art Gallery for the community to enjoy, offering visitors a chance to witness the remarkable talent and vision of one of our area's most gifted artists. It’s a powerful reminder of how art connects us—not only to beauty but to each other, through the stories we share and the generosity we show.

Don’t miss the chance to experience this extraordinary watercolor masterpiece and honor the artist's enduring legacy before Taos Memories finally returns home.
The Art of Island Life will return next week with more stories and inspiration from our coastal community. Have a story to share or an upcoming event? Reach out to me at melissa@padreislandartgallery.com.
