From the Shoreline to the Storyline

If you’ve walked into Padre Island Art Gallery, you may have noticed a striking pelican painting near the entrance created by the late John Olvey. It hangs beside information about the scholarship that bears his name, a reminder of both his artistry and his love for the ocean.
While his elaborately carved surfboards have all found homes, our support for his legacy continues through contributions to the John Olvey Scholarship, awarded each year to a Texas Gulf Surfing Association (TGSA) member who embodies John’s positivity, dedication, and love for the sport.
And if you’re curious about Raymond, ask us sometime—there’s a story there.
TGSA: Building Confidence from the First Wave Out
Since 1988, TGSA has been a steady presence along the Texas coast, fostering not only competitive skill but also character, sportsmanship, and stewardship of the ocean. Surfers as young as five learn that TGSA is more than a competition schedule—it’s a community. Members develop confidence both in the water and out, gaining mentors, teammates, and lifelong friends.
That spirit aligned perfectly with John Olvey’s own life. A gifted surfer from a young age, John competed locally, regionally, and nationally, but it wasn’t just about the trophies. For him, surfing was about connection—to the water, to fellow surfers, and to the community. Even in his art—whether carved into the shape of a board or painted on canvas—he carried that same fluidity and movement.
One Day, Endless Impact
This year, TGSA caught a new wave of opportunity thanks to Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi’s American Advertising Federation student team. Each year, they choose one nonprofit for their ONE DAY campaign, pouring months of planning into a single, high-energy day of creative work. Out of all of the applicants, TGSA was selected for their deep roots in the community and the potential to grow their mission even further.

On October 19, 2024, TGSA representatives kicked off the day with a Q&A session, sharing the organization’s story and goals with the students. Then the creative sprint began—teams broke into groups to develop social media concepts, billboard designs, radio and TV ad scripts, print layouts, and promotional merchandise ideas. By the end of the day, they had built a full campaign package designed to help TGSA expand its membership, strengthen sponsorships, and draw new fans to the sport.

The campaign will roll out through 2025, leading up to the John Olvey Texas State Surfing Championships in April, where the next scholarship recipient will be announced.

A Scholarship with Heart
The scholarship itself is more than a monetary award—it’s a bridge between John’s love of surfing and his belief in supporting the next generation. Each year, it is presented to a TGSA high school student in good standing who not only surfs but demonstrates the same positive spirit John was known for. Past recipients have spoken about how it motivated them to keep competing, pursue their goals, and stay connected to the surfing community.
Full-Circle Moments
For Yvonne Olvey, John’s wife, the partnership with TGSA is deeply personal.
“Working with TGSA on the scholarship and the annual contests has been my way of honoring John,” she shared. “The last three years have made me respect, understand, and enjoy TGSA’s mission even more. I know John would be proud.”
For me, as someone who had the privilege of showcasing John’s art in our gallery and seeing how his creative vision extended far beyond the shoreline, this moment feels like the perfect intersection of legacy and forward momentum. It’s art, sport, and community catching the same wave.
