The holiday season is upon us—a time to connect, give, and embrace the joy that creativity and community bring. From festive gatherings to inspiring art classes, there’s no shortage of opportunities to make this season special here on The Island.

While the Holiday Lights and Tree Lighting Ceremony on December 12th promises to dazzle the community with coastal cheer, it’s also an opportunity to gather with neighbors and celebrate the spirit of the season. Events like these remind us that the true heart of the holidays lies in the spirit of giving and connection.

A Holiday Memory Worth Sharing

One of my favorite holiday memories is from when my daughter was eight years old. She was always eager to do something special for others, so that Christmas we decided to deliver goodie-filled stockings to residents at a local nursing home. We dressed her up as an elf—complete with pointy ears, a jingly hat and shoes—and she excitedly handed out stockings filled with small treats to the residents.

What struck me most that day wasn’t just the joy on the faces of those receiving the stockings—it was how deeply the experience touched my daughter. She asked thoughtful questions about the people she met, and even years later, she would reflect on them. It was a simple gesture, but one that left lasting memories for everyone involved.

This season, consider how you can create moments like these, whether it’s visiting a nursing home, leaving a kind note for a neighbor, or volunteering at a local event. Small acts of kindness often have a way of making the biggest impact.

While you’re planning your shopping and holiday events, remember to support the many incredible local businesses that make our island special. From unique finds from local artists to the delicious handmade treats at Island Joe’s—home of the best cinnamon rolls I’ve had since my grandmother’s—and so many others, every visit helps support the people who keep our community thriving.

On Thursday, December 7th, from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM, join local artist Susan Balbin for a Delft Blue Painting Class at Padre Island Art Gallery. Participants will create a ceramic ornament or tile in the classic Delft blue style—a keepsake or gift that’s both personal and unique. It’s a wonderful way to slow down during the busy holiday season and make something meaningful.

Please note that the gallery will be closed December 13th through 16th, but will be open on Christmas Eve from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM for last-minute shopping. Whether you’re looking for coastal-inspired treasures or handmade art, you’re sure to find something heartfelt for your loved ones.

And if you happen to find one of the painted sand dollars mentioned last week, I’d love for you to share a photo! It’s always wonderful to see how small acts of creativity can bring joy to others.

Embracing the Spirit of the Island

From the glow of holiday lights to the charm of island-inspired art, this season is full of opportunities to celebrate and connect. I hope you’ll embrace the spirit of giving and creativity while soaking in the sights and sounds that make the Island so special this time of year.

Wishing you and your loved ones a holiday season filled with joy, inspiration, and meaningful connections.
